Program Impact

More than 3,000 afterschool and camp programs downloaded Engineering Everywhere materials in just the first year that curriculum units were available, reaching an estimated 15,000 middle school-aged children. With additional support, the program could reach an estimated 50,000 more children in three years. In early evaluations of pilot units, educators gave the program high marks for quality and youth engagement.


Program Overview

Engineering Everywhere is a free engineering curriculum for middle school-aged youth in afterschool and camp programs. The program empowers young people to explore real-world engineering problems using the engineering design process, creativity and collaboration.

Engineering Everywhere is designed with out-of-school time in mind. Flexible curriculum units present personally meaningful and globally relevant engineering challenges that engage young people in problem solving, critical and creative thinking, and opportunities to learn from one another. Right now, four curriculum units are available:

  • Don’t Runoff (urban landscapes): Environmental engineering
  • Here Comes the Sun (Insulated homes): Green engineering
  • Put a Lid on It (safety helmets): Biomechanical engineering
  • Food for Thought (ice cream): Process engineering

In 2015, Engineering Everywhere will release six more units:

  • Go Fish: Engineering prosthetic tails
  • It’s About Time: Engineering timekeeping devices
  • Plants to Plastics: Engineering bioplastics
  • Outbreak Alert: Engineering a pandemic response
  • Growing Up: Engineering vertical farms
  • It’s in the Bag: Engineering bioinspired gear

Each unit includes six to 10 activities and takes 45 to 60 minutes to complete. Detailed lesson plans, helpful background information, “suggested questions” and online resources—including engaging audio and video segments—help educators push young people to the next level of engineering thinking. Professional development workshops build educators’ confidence in leading engineering activities in afterschool or camp programs.  

How To Get Involved

There are many ways to become involved with Engineering Everywhere:

  • $500 would pay for one Engineering Everywhere unit to be implemented in an afterschool or camp program serving 10 to 24 children.
  • STEM professionals can volunteer to lead children through Engineering Everywhere units in out-of-school programs.
