Program Impact

Reasoning Mind serves 95,000 students across nine states and expects to reach 300,000 by 2018. Evaluations of the program are conducted annually and show consistently positive results including significant increases in students’ standardized math test scores, higher class time spent on task, and an increased interest in math and related careers. Multiple independent evaluations have also confirmed the program’s impact. 


Program Overview

Reasoning Mind is a nonprofit with a mission to provide a first-rate math education for every child. To achieve this goal, Reasoning Mind partners with schools to provide an interactive, online mathematics curriculum for elementary and middle school students. The program ignites students’ interest in math, develops higher-order thinking skills, and prepares them for algebra—the “gatekeeper” course to college. In addition, Reasoning Mind offers ongoing professional development, training, and in-person support for teachers and administrators using the program.

Reasoning Mind uses a unique method called “instruction modeling.” This means studying the best of offline math education and then designing blended learning that recreates this experience for students. More concretely, instruction modeling involves three steps: (1) rigorously study the practices of the world’s best math teachers, (2) build online lessons that recreate these practices, and (3) for practices which can’t be done online, train and support teachers to carry them out in their classrooms. Using this method, every child can enjoy the benefits of learning in the world’s best math classroom.

How To Get Involved

There are a number of ways for corporate supporters to get involved with Reasoning Mind. Corporations can partner with Reasoning Mind to make a positive impact on the math education of an entire district or community. You can host an outreach event to introduce education and policy officials to the program, kick start and invest in Reasoning Mind pilots in your community through campus-based grants, sponsor professional development for teachers using the program, underwrite conferences for program teachers and administrators, or help in a variety of other ways.

More than 400 visionary philanthropists have supported Reasoning Mind including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Brown Foundation of Houston, The Cockrell Foundation, the ExxonMobil Foundation, Highland Capital Management, The Hoglund Foundation, Houston Endowment, Inc., the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, and many more. The program has received endorsements from the Academy of Medicine, Engineering & Science of Texas, The Philanthropy Roundtable, and The National Council on Teacher Quality, and many others. In addition, several prominent math education experts have expressed their enthusiasm for the program, including Dr. William Schmidt (Michigan State University), Dr. Neal Lane (Rice University), Dr. Hung-Hsi Wu (retired, University of California, Berkeley), Dr. R.
