ST MathReady to Scale

Impact

Spatial and Temporal (ST) Math uses innovative technology to teach math concepts, problem solving techniques, and critical thinking skills to elementary school children. Schools that fully implement ST Math see double, and even triple, the growth in math proficiency when measured against comparable schools. The program reaches more than 1,000,000 students and 44,000 teachers in 45 states across the country.

We have been supporting [ST Math] this long because they have developed one of the best and most effective approaches to helping students learn math that we’ve ever seen, with strong rigorous and significant student outcome data to prove it.

Design Principles

The programs in this database clear a high bar. STEMworks reviewed each program against the Design Principles for Effective STEM Philanthropy. Programs must be Accomplished (accomplished) across all Design Principles, or be Developing (developing) in a maximum of three areas.

Overarching Principles

  • Need Accomplished

Identify and target a compelling and well-defined need.

  • Evaluation Developing

Use rigorous evaluation to continuously measure and inform progress towards the compelling need identified.

  • Sustainability Accomplished

    Ensure work is sustainable.

  • Replication & Scalability Accomplished

    Demonstrate replicability and scalability.

  • Partnerships Accomplished

    Create high impact partnerships.

  • Capacity Accomplished

Ensure organizational capacity to achieve goals.

STEM Principles

  • Challenging & Relevant Content Accomplished

Offer challenging and relevant STEM content for the target audience.

  • STEM Practices Accomplished

    Incorporate and encourage STEM practices.

  • Inspiration Developing

Inspire interest and engagement in STEM.

  • Under-Represented Groups Accomplished

Identify and address the needs of under-represented groups.

Program Overview

Spatial and Temporal (ST) Math uses innovative technology to teach math concepts, problem solving techniques, and critical thinking skills to children in pre-Kindergarten through sixth grade. Schools that fully implement ST Math see double, and even triple, the growth in math proficiency when measured against comparable schools. Spatial-Temporal (ST) Math® is the leader in visual math instruction and represents the highest quality and most effective blended learning math solution in K-12 education. Created by MIND Research Institute, ST Math is game-based instructional software for K-12 and is designed to boost math comprehension and proficiency through visual learning. Integrating with classroom instruction, ST Math incorporates the latest research in learning and the brain and promotes mastery-based learning and mathematical understanding. The ST Math software games use interactive, graphically-rich animations that visually represent mathematical concepts to improve conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills. Whether in the classroom, computer lab or at home, learning never stops with ST Math. When teachers bring ST Math into the classroom, projected onto a screen or interactive whiteboard, the software games help students make connections between the visual representations from ST Math and symbolic representations found in their core instruction. With the touch functionality of ST Math students experience an even greater level of interactivity. With ST Math, learning continues outside of school too, as teachers can assign specific math objectives in the software program for homework.
